Interview about the lesbian lifestyle (23 August 1977) – Linda Evans, Rosemary Howard, Jo Crowley and Dilys Grant. The programme is produced and presented by Lynne Alexander. Recorded at Radio New Zealand, Christchurch.
Definition of Lesbian
Jo Crowley – a lesbian woman is a woman that relates freely to their own sex..
Dilys Grant - We relate to women intelligently and physically
Linda Evans – Radical lesbians.. we’re fighting against the way that lesbians have always been seen solely in terms of their sexuality.. it is important that women should be able to live together
How would you define Radical Lesbian .. history being written by men..
Lesbian Movement is a political stance, not just sexual..
Linda Evans – living independently of men.. benefits.. abortions.. living in a society that is male dominated..
What are the numbers involved.. every women is a lesbian except those who don’t know it yet..
You can’t quantify the numbers..
As Lesbian Feminists we try not to relate to people in terms of our sexuality..
Linda Evans - Lesbian culture.. emerging and spinning off from the Women’s Movement..
I was a Lesbian first.. but for a lot of people they find their political ideology first..
I’ve been involved with Feminism for about five years..
Jargon – Straight, Coming Out ..
What is the difference between Gay Liberation and the Lesbian Movement.. definition of words..
Coming out.. hiding in the closet..
Word definitions - Dyke has a new respectability.. they were originally used to put us down.. but now..
Bisexuality in the Lesbian Movement.. it’s become very trendy lately..
As lesbians we have no models to follow.. heterosexual privilege.. The norm of our society is heterosexuality .. everything is geared to that..
Lesbian relationships have often been thought of as flippant and casual.. we don’t get presents, or set-up in a home
Are there just as many stable Lesbian relationships? People are defining their relationships differently.. I don’t know that many long-term successful heterosexual relationships..
We don’t want to slip into the destructive couple pattern
Any direct danger from the law? women with children are in quite a lot of danger.. Lesbian mothers – the fear that under lesbian mothers children will become homosexual..
We as lesbians, all came from heterosexual relationships..
Lesbian mothers civil rights
The children of lesbians are fortunate to be around relationships that are really caring..
Discrimination.. myths – Lesbians are lesbians because they’re ugly.. an attempt to explain why they choose second best.. it’s a positive choice made by women..
Hormone imbalance.. there’s no physical change a woman undergoes.. she may walk a bit taller..
Speculation on sexual lives of lesbians.. any elaborate devices used? .. the myth of the vaginal orgasm.. to enjoy sex from a total point of view..
Female sexuality has always been curbed by male sexuality
Do lesbian relationships have a male/female counterpart.. Who’s the man? .. this is sometimes valid.. we have resorted to copy heterosexual relationships..
Women relating together as women.. role playing ..
Lesbian clothing.. women’s clothing is geared to relating to men.. women are now dressing more in practical clothing..
I’ve heard older lesbians say that they dress that way to avoid male attention.. identifying each other
Discrimination in families.. pressures on a young lesbian.. Coming Out was really hard.. my parents and I went through a really long time..
You can make yourself acceptable as a lesbian by not talking about it.. there’s a place for gay men if they play a campy role.. can bring out a lot of hostility in men..
