Grafthorst – friends of Eves - Damian.. Laura..
Holmes – Eve is only three.. is she starting wonder if she’s different..

Continues with an interview with Dr Richard Meech (1986?), Chairman of the AIDS advisory committee, by Paul Holmes on 2ZB Wellington
Richard Meech – No children with AIDS in New Zealand.. carrying the AIDS antibody – several children in New Zealand..
Meech – There is no reason to exclude them from other children when there is ‘normal’ social contact and bladder or bowl continence is normal.. grey area of concern..
Meech – circumstances in Australia are quite different..
Holmes – Saliva
Meech – there has been one study done.. 85 specimens were studied .. only one specimen of saliva came up positive.. haemophiliacs..
Meech -this virus is not terribly infectious.. you have to go out of your way and do certain things to contract the virus.. health care worker accidents.. it is a lifestyle disease.. blood exposure .. sexual exposure..
Meech – there are certainly young to older children (5 –12) at school who are virus carriers.. schools are not informed.. this is not a virus spread by casual personal contact .. both in the North and South Island.. all of the cases are haemophilic children..
Meech – If Eve’s social behaviour is ‘normal’.. no biting or aggressive involvement with other children .. there is no reason to exclude the pre-school situation.
Meech – our understanding of AIDS has only been around for five years.. 10-15% of those who are antibody positive will go on to develop AIDS.. another 10-15% may go on to be unwell.. after about five years one-third may have some sort of illness..
Holmes – Are these handful of children going to die
Meech – I can’t answer that question
Continues with 2ZB talkback
Caller: Female – I’m going to divide my pension by half and give it to Eve..
Caller: Female – she doesn’t have AIDS itself.. does AIDS work the same as Polio.. if she’s only got the antibodies she wouldn’t infect anyone..??
Caller: Female – I think instead of funding Eve coming to New Zealand we should be putting money into research..
Holmes – discrimination against the family
News – Graeme Lee says several MPs who are Catholic may be wavering because of religious obligations.. Bill Dillon
Bill Dillon - I don’t believe that I am rejecting the Catholic viewpoint.. the Catholic viewpoint has been that the legality and the morality are two separate issues.
