I believe AIDS is likely to reach New Zealand..
How’s it spread - secretions.. recent story of person holding up a bank saying they have AIDS.. no health-care workers have contracted AIDS from patient care.. Hospital precautions – same as Hepatitis
Unusual phenomenon .. the birth of a new disease.. possibly a virus.. first cases in 1979.. female partners have developed AIDS..
Connection between AIDS and Haemophilia.. possibly blood transmitted – not proven.. antigenic challenges.. I’m sure many people are exposed to the virus.. but there are a whole lot of factors to actually getting AIDS..
Infected batches of blood .. haemophiliacs .. it’s not nearly as infectious as Hepatitis B.. no cases reported in Germany or Japan..
We’ve done blood tests here .. lymphocyte tests.. we’re collecting data .. we’ve put some serum aside.. when new tests come along.. common blood products in use..
Blood products .. not possible to say that New Zealand plasma is cleaner than anywhere else.. transmission of Hepatitis more of a worry .. should you reduce the amount of blood product you have .. a question of balance..
Alternative products for haemophiliacs.. making blood safer – heat treated Factor 8.. five year study..
What’s the World Federation of Haemophilia doing .. international information centre.. public relations programmes..
The prognosis is poor.. the survival rate at three years is approximately 40%..

Irradiation of products.. looking at irradiating Factor 8 and 9
Black Africa to Haiti to New York.. AIDS hasn’t been reported in Japan.. 80% of commercial Factor 8 concentrate comes from the US..
Is there a research programme in New Zealand for gay men.. pre-AIDS test.. they thought they had a predictive test .. If you were to screen active gay men..

Plasma products .. we are making every effort to get plasma processing in New Zealand..
Graham Underhill – reassuring haemophiliacs.. recent publicity has done a lot of damage.. the gay community is just as concerned as the haemophiliacs
