Summary

Gay Pride Week (1976) – interviews about being gay with Barry Nonweiler, Judith Emms, Alan Seymour interviewed by Catherine Caulcord for the Brian Scott Show (2ZB)

01:20

We say good morning to Catherine Caulcord

01:40

Caulcord - We are talking today about the Pink Triangle .. you may have seen it around Wellington.. homosexuals were forced to wear the Pink Triangle in Nazi Concentration Camps.. Nazi Germany.. If you’re given one you’re asked to wear in solidarity..

02:30

We’re going to try and understand..

03:00

Barry Nonweiler – making people aware of gay people.. not just stereotypes..

03:20

Is this the right way of going about it (i.e. being out in public)

03:35

Nonweiler – accepting ourselves.. I feel less strained the more honest I’ve become.. I found it hard to tell my parents.. I gave out lots of hints.. but I couldn’t bring myself to tell them face-to-face.. my brother and parents talked.. parents took it well.. more and more interested in the subject..

Radio adverts

07:07

We’re talking to three homosexuals closely involved with Gay Pride Week.. people can’t cope with homosexuals dancing together..

07:50

Judith Emms – first suggested that I may be a lesbian at fifteen.. fell in love with a woman when I was seventeen.. evil.. perverted.. I blocked it out for eight years.. had a two year relationship.. I read a novel .. for the first time .. identified with it.. became happy to be a lesbian.. took me a while to get use to it.. where to find other gays.. terrified of propositioning a straight woman.. I was twenty-five before I went to my first gay party..

09:40

Emms – it’s a horrifying thought.. society pressures you into being heterosexual.. as a woman your worth is judged by men.. as a lesbian you’re denied .. career women are frowned upon.. people see homosexuals in terms of sex..

11:40

It’s Gay Pride Week .. music track

12:14

Hagley Park Murder example

12:45

Alan Seymour – I’ve been beaten up.. queer bashing.. I didn’t fight back because I didn’t want to get more beaten up.. Victoria University.. provocation for a beating? .parallel with women and rape.. gays ask to be beaten up because they’re gay..

15:35

This is Gay Pride Week..

16:00

Most gay people don’t go out in public as couples.. Two homosexual clubs in Wellington.. Stonewall riots..

17:55

Judith Emms – we went out to a dine and dance and were abused..

19:10

Radio Advert – shop New World

19:50

What must it be like to be a homosexual in New Zealand.. Guilt

20:10

Judith Emms – guilt.. to touch somebody is wrong and evil.. telling people in private.. you’re afraid that if people find out.. schizophrenic lifestyle.. the only time you can be yourself is when you’re with other homosexuals.. and those places are few and far between.. In Auckland and Wellington the only places are bars and homosexual clubs.. there are two places in Wellington that I can go to – and they are revolting .. they are very heavily associated with drink .. meat markets.. drink and sex.. you never meet the stable relaxed people..
