Alison Laurie – roundup of lesbian and gay marches around the country (13 September 1985)

06:05

Sandy Hall (Auckland march) – went really well.. didn’t get any media coverage.. went down Queen Street.. 10,000 people.. all the lesbian and gay groups were there.. Coalition of Christians who support the Bill.. Trade Unions.. HUG.. speakers at the rally .. everyone was totally high after the march.. we had a truck at the front of the march.. sound system .. balloons.. posters.. disappointed with media coverage.. I’ve never seen the Auckland public line the streets .. good feeling from the crowd..

10:25

Anne Barnes (Christchurch march) – 2,000 turned out .. first march our group has organised.. rally in the square.. variety of groups .. HUG.. women’s groups.. peace groups.. Maori groups.. banners.. chants.. balloons.. speakers at rally .. poor media coverage.. TV didn’t want to handle the march at all..

13:40

Bronwyn Dean (Christchurch march) – it was a very nice, happy march.. hecklers were insignificant.. good natured.. the public was quite curious.. surprised, interested and jealous.. some young men jeered..

15:14

Yoka Neumann (Dunedin march) – pink and black Friday in Dunedin.. we were apprehensive.. we put up posters everywhere.. Otago Daily Times said 500, but I would say 750 – 1000.. all the groups.. HUG.. lesbians and gay men.. students.. lots of just ordinary Dunedin citizens.. route of march.. three speakers at rally .. Octagon.. we had balloons and streamers.. I’d have liked more colour.. Lesbian and Gay Rights Now.. poor media coverage.. especially the Otago Daily Times..

20:50

Sounds from the Wellington march .. chants “we’re here because we’re queer.. if you’re gay and you know it clap your hands.. gay rights.. we will live our lives in freedom..”

22:30

Glenda Gale (at the Wellington march) – “I’d like to thank you all for coming out.. In the past we have been easily silenced.. don’t be fooled - a closet is not a safe place..”
